The Perfect Outfit for Fall Family Photos – The Woodlands Photographer

I get this question all the time — what should I wear for my family portraits? What’s the perfect outfit for our pictures? The short answer is – there is no perfect outfit! It all depends on your family and your personal style! However, there are some outfit choices that really take your portraits up a notch, and some colours that translate better on camera than others. These fashion forward clients of mine showed up for their family portrait session with wardrobes that really stood out, and the overall tonality and harmony of their family pictures really shows!

POPS OF COLOUR
These ladies really stole the show with their eye catching colour coordinated outfits, that make use of pretty fall tones. Their outfits blend well together with the environment and each other, without being too tonally matching. Beautiful!

FORMAL ELEGANCE
Create wall worthy works of photographic art with a stylish wardrobe emsemble. The little touches here really set them apart – the strings of pearls, lace overlays, and professionally styled hair that really show care and preparation for their family pictures.

DELICATE NEUTRALS
Feminine and airy, sweet neutrals blend well into natural locations like parks and fields. The natural colours are earthy and calm, adding an extra layer of beauty and grace to your portraits.

BOLD COLOUR AND PATTERNS
This is a popular look for late fall, with Christmas just around the corner! Add a pop of merry cheer to your portraits to make them perfect for the holiday cards. Red is a bold choice that looks beautiful against the fall golden greenery.

BLUE IS THE COOLEST COLOUR
Blue just always looks good! No matter what hue or shade, the camera loves, loves, loves the colour blue. It pops against grass but also looks perfectly at home in urban settings. Pair with peach or baby neutrals for a winning combo.

ADD SOME WHIMSY
Babies and toddlers are tons of fun to dress up for family photos! When our formal pictures are done, you can bring along some adorable outfits for special individual portraits of children to cherish. This little one sports the iconic tutu, always a popular choice for sweet baby girls! Try a cute fedora, tie, and vest for little lads.

ADD LAYERS FOR INTEREST
If your session date falls on a colder day, you can add layers to avoid the shivers and still look stylish. Overcoats, peacoats, long patterned sweaters, and slim vests look great without adding bulk.

CHOOSE YOUR PALETTE
Do you see yourself in a long white eyelet dress, with a big floppy sunhat and espadrilles? Or maybe a short and flirty sundress in floaty chiffon, the colour of spring daffodils or mint? Choose the colour palette you want to build off, from neutral to vibrant florals, taking into consideration the vibe you want to give off — sweet and innocent, fresh and bright, or airy and emotive.

ADD ACCESSORIES
Glam your outfit up or down with hats, scarves, belts and boots. Go shabby chic with tasseled headpieces and feathers, or boho style with a floral crown with barefeet. Keep the colour tones in mind and try to mesh your accessories so they make sense — natural fibres with earthy toned clothing, petite and girly for feminine and airy sundresses, nude heels with classic styles.

CHOOSE YOUR LOCATION TO MATCH
When we talk about which location suits your personal style best, we’ll go over all your outfit choices and narrow down which location in the Spring and Woodlands area best fit you. It makes sense to to shoot out in a flower field if you are looking for a more au naturale type session, with a spring dress in nature tones. If you want to go glam and trendy and pair your spring dress with heels and shopping bags, we’ll head to a more urban location. It’s all up to you!

What to Wear for Family Photos – The Woodlands and Spring TX

It’s that time of year again – fall family portraits! Since we’re shooting outdoors, you may be wondering what type of outfits will look best or how to coordinate your wardrobe so you all look fantastic and match together well. We’ll discuss your styling before the session, and I’ll advise you on what types of colours, fabrics and patterns photograph beautifully while still keeping with your own personal style. Some hues just look better on camera, and we want to be sure that your style and colour of clothes matches your chosen location.

Here are some tips for your upcoming session to think about before our meeting.

MATCH THE CLOTHES TO THE SEASON
In general, for fall photos it’s ideal to wear colours that match the season and the foliage – think teal not baby blue, russet red instead of bright red, and warm orange yellow instead of lemon. Bright whites can detract from the most important element of the photo — you and your family! So opt for a more mellow, warmer shade of beige, cream or soft yellow.

COORDINATE, DON’T MATCH
When choosing the family’s clothes, keep to the same colour but choose various hues so you don’t match perfectly. If you’re wearing a deep purple dress, put your daughter in a lighter shade of violet, and the boys in teal or blue. Throw in a few neutral shades, like brown or light yellow, for contrast.

FOOTWEAR AND ACCESSORIES
Boots always look fabulous in the fall and they go with anything. Brown shoes are preferable to black. Keep jewelry and accessories minimal and make sure they don’t block important features. A scarf can easily obscure your face and watches can clash with your natural setting. Less is usually more.
