Choosing Your Wall Portrait Size, Style and Format: The Woodlands Portrait Photographer

The family portrait is an important investment, so it’s essential to ensure you have carefully considered the overall look, style and proportion for the final piece. When your family, senior, engagement or maternity portrait session is completed, I invite clients for an in person Viewing Appointment so I can personally help you choose the perfect size, ratio and medium for your wall portrait. I’ll show you samples of the products I offer, so you can inspect and touch the products yourself.

For gallery wrapped canvases, these come ready to hang and you do not need to frame them. Metals are designed to be hung without a frame to show off the superior gloss, and the sturdy waterproof and UV resistant design means you don’t have to worry about sun or water damage. For photographic prints I offer complimentary styrene mounting so you can mount your portrait on the wall without a frame, and it’s thin enough to put in wall frames.  Here is a comparison of a senior portrait from a session in the Woodlands.

WITH FRAMES

OPTION 1:  By using a larger frame, you can highlight your wall portrait with accent matting around a smaller size print. The portrait keeps  it’s original ratio and composition intact with matching coloured mat before being inserted into a  frame. The matted frame means you don’t have to crop the original shot. There is a wide variety of colors and styles to choose from, for custom or traditional matted frames.

matting-8x12

OPTION 2: Without matting. This option zooms in larger on the image, but crops out some of the background and the subject.

framed-16x20

WITHOUT FRAMES

OPTION 1: A mounted print, metal or canvas without the frame. The traditional camera ratio for older cameras was 4:5, which created the infamous 8×10 desk print. As a wall portrait, your image could be anything from a 16×20 to a 32×40 or larger. Since the camera shoots at a 2:3 ratio, this crops your image.

crop-16x20

OPTION 2: A mounted print, metal or canvas without the frame, left in it’s original composition and ratio. This size works well for image of standing subjects, where you want to keep the surrounding environment. For this image, it’s the best choice for this particular image to keep the beautiful field around her.

High School Senior Portraits – Show Your Uni Pride

It’s your senior year, a time to think about how you got to where you are and also to dream big about the future. When it comes to your senior portraits, you want to pictures to show you as you are now, but also all the amazing things you have to look forward to! So for your senior pictures, bring something along to represent your present accomplishments, such as your high school Letterman jacket or your class ring. And then bring something to represent your upcoming years as a University or College undergrad, or a special trip or internship you have planned. Here’s a few ideas on how to incorporate your upcoming endeavours into your senior portrait session!

WEAR YOUR COLOURS

Are you off to Texas State? Bring some clothing with maroon and gold, to signify where you’ll be at school next year. Or burnt orange and white if you’re off to UT.  This gorgeous young lady is on her way in September to Johns Hopkins University, where she received early acceptance for Pre Med.   Their colours include Columbia blue and she looks amazing in their colours!

Can you guess where this pretty senior will be attending? Those are Baylor colours!!

BRING A SIGN BOARD

A great DIY project for your upcoming senior photos is to make your own sign board! You can use a chalk board, or make your own poster. The great thing about making your own is that you get to choose the slogan, and be more creative! This gorgeous senior is proud to be Bama Bound!

BANNERS AND PENNANTS

With your university acceptance package, you often get a complimentary pennant or banner for you to display, to kick off the school pride.  Get your hands on a school pennant from your chosen University, and hold it up! This beauty was all smiles with her banner for Texas A&M, she’s ready to be an Aggie! Gig ’em!!

INCORPORATE PATTERNS AND ITEMS ASSOCIATED WITH YOUR SCHOOL

This stunning senior is excited to be off to Alabama, and brought not just a school pennant but wore this adorable hounds-tooth patterned dress. Everyone knows hounds-tooth goes with Crimson Tide!

Fashionable Senior Portraits – Around Town in the Woodlands

This beautiful senior was looking for something a little more urban and colourful for her senior portraits in the Woodlands. So we headed to the busy streets and shopping district, to capture a more “city feel” to her senior pictures. We were looking for a busier, more chic scene for the first part of her senior photoshoot before moving on to a more natural environment for the second half.

We shot around the theatre and shopping centre first,  and she wore this amazing dress which worked perfectly with the busy downtown atmosphere.  I love the shiny black walls and windows for reflections, mixed with classic portraits.

We moved across to the Waterway area, to shoot some dramatic black and white portraits using the beautiful light in the canal. I love this location for it’s intense light and shadows. As with all my senior portrait shoots, my clients have unlimited outfit changes, and I encourage variety for your session.

Another outfit change, and shift in location. This tucked away little corner has beautiful soft light for flattering portraits and a neutral backdrop. Wearing bright or deep colours against the grey walls really stands out. I adore the design on this unique dress and the boots are a fantastic match!

Senior Portraits Outdoors – Senior Boy Session in the Woodlands

I realized that I completely forgot to blog this handsome guy’s session from ages ago! One of my first senior boys that I photographed in the Woodlands for his senior portrait sessions, so long ago and still one of my favourite sessions! He had such a classic look, and really great style. We made use of dramatic light in parking garages and canals around the Woodlands area, for a more urban feel to his shoot with lots of concrete, reflections, and directional light.

I offer a senior boy portrait special, a mini session just for guys, to keep it short and simple — one hour, digital images as a download, and a keepsake hard cover proof book to take home.  Ask me about my senior boy mini session special!

What to Wear for Senior Pictures in the Woodlands and Spring – Cowboy Boots Edition

Getting ready for your senior pictures is exciting and also a little overwhelming when it comes to the BIG question: What should I wear for my senior portraits? Luckily, when you book a senior portrait session with me, you get unlimited outfit changes and we shoot in two different locations in the Woodlands or Spring,  so you can wear all your favourite outfits. One accessory seems to be very popular with my high school senior clients – cowboy boots!

how-to-wear-cowboy-boots

The great thing about your cowboy boots is that you can build your own style around them, and there are a million different ways you can express yourself. Bright, bold and colourful, understated and simple, or sweet and feminine, the options are limitless! It’s a great way to show off your true Texan style, and even if you’re not Texan born but still want to show you have a little bit of Texas in your heart, it’s an accessory that everyone will recognize and associate with this great state! Here’s a few tips when putting together your outfit:

CHOOSE A BASE COLOUR

Maybe your boots have a touch of colour you can work with, for colour harmony, like the teal outfit above. Then you can choose a contrasting and complimentary colour as an accent, for necklaces, earrings or a scarf. If your boots are plain black, brown, or white, choose a colour that looks great on you and photographs well and build your outfit around it, with a complimentary accent. For a country look, teal blue, soft yellow, light peach and airy cream look gorgeous against green fields and dirt roads.

MIX AND MATCH WITH DRESSES AND PANTS

You can incorporate your boots twice over if you choose two outfits to match them. Wear a cute and flirty skirt for one set of shots, and then change it up with skinny jeans or leggings.

ACCESSORIZE

Pair your cowboy boots with a jacket or vest over a lacy dress, or add a belt or rows of chunky necklaces to add visual interest and texture to your overall look. Head pieces and cowboy hats also match perfectly!

DON’T BE AFRAID TO MIX COUNTRY AND URBAN GLAM

Show a sophisticated sense of style and wear your cowboy boots with a drop dead gorgeous floor length prom dress,  and shoot in the city streets. Or wear a twirly skirt or tutu-inspired ball gown in the middle of a field. Mixing genres is interesting and shows your unique sense of style!

Check out how some of my senior clients have worn their cowboy boots for their own senior pictures! All different, all beautiful, all showing their Texan style!

The Woodlands Senior Photography — Hello Gorgeous

What do you get when you put together a gorgeously stylish senior, to die for fall colour and amazing golden hour light? This most perfect senior session in the Woodlands at peak fall season with the stunning Claire.

For the Luxe Senior Sessions, my girls get the royal treatment with hair and make up styling with Monika at her private salon room,  suited to each girl’s personal style. Then we get started at the first location, with the first of the unlimited outfit changes to kick off the photoshoot. For Claire, we wanted to have one location that incorporated a variety of elements like concrete and stone, for an urban feel, but that also had some fall colour. And, importantly, we wanted to use landmarks of the Woodlands, so the location would be identifiable and pay homage to her hometown.

A gorgeous blue dress for her first portrait series.

Then a switch to something a little more quirky and unique.  I love this whole ensemble for senior portraits. The layered look is perfect for fall, and it combines some flattering neutral tones with a bright pop of colour.  Add the hat and drop the sweater, and it’s a whole new look.

Don’t forget to bring your letterman jacket! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many patches on one jacket as I did on this musical girl!

One last outfit change to round out the senior portrait session with a soft casual look. We had the most amazingly gorgeous light at the end of the day, with the warm autumn sun peeking through the trees.

The Sportsman – Senior Photographer in Conroe

When this Class of 2015  senior’s family contacted me for senior portraits up in Silverstone, Conroe I was pretty thrilled at the ideas they were tossing around for his senior pictures. They told me how he’s an outdoor sportsman – a fisherman, a hunter, proficient with the bow and arrow, and a lover of the great outdoors.  They had the perfect little spot in mind up in Conroe, where we could trek through the forest and along a muddy river bank, to get some great shots of him with his gear in a natural environment.

A senior with some cool hobbies? Shooting in the forest and in the mud? Trekking through the tall grass? Count me in! I love a shoot where we get to walk around and get some action shots, and shoot something a little different.

As we were shooting, I was told the area is known for having a 12 foot gator.  Now that I’d have love to have gotten a picture of….from a distance of course! Thanks so much to John for being a great subject, I had a lot of fun with this session!

Bentwater Conroe Senior Photography – Senior Style

This funny and photogenic senior boy chose a great location for his Class of 2015 senior portraits – this great little spot up in Bentwater, Conroe with plenty of interesting landscape features and some pretty fall colour. For senior guys, we keep it short and simple with an hour shoot in your chosen location, which still leaves you plenty of time to get an outfit change in there. There are many of great locations in the Woodlands, Spring or Conroe area, or we can customize your session and shoot in your own backyard.

Mini Collages for Home and Office Desks – The Woodlands Photography

When it comes to how you’ll display the images from your senior, family, maternity or engagement portrait session, there are a lot of choices out there. I will guide you at your viewing and ordering session, showing you all the fantastic products I offer in person so you can see them close up and feel the superior quality.  From large groupings of wall canvases, to mini albums for portability, you’ll get the products that are right for you.

While large mounted prints and wall art are wonderful for home displays,  you also have some smaller product options so you can take your favourite photos into more personal spaces, like your office desk or bedroom dresser. One of the most perfect ways to size down is to put a few images together in a mini collage. I offer these 5×10 desk collages, mounted on artboard for durability, which can be fit into a frame or beautifully displayed in an easel. I offer several designs to choose from, depending on how many images you want to show off.

Put one in your bedroom, to keep photos of your kids by your bedside.

High School Senior Boy – The Woodlands Senior Photographer

It’s not often that guys call for senior photos, so it’s nice when I get a call for a senior session for one! Some high schools in the Woodlands and Spring allow seniors an entire page for their yearbook pictures, so this handsome guy needed some great photos of him to fill up his page. I offer a special For The Guys session since they tend to want it short and simple — under an hour, just a few great photos, without the long sessions with outfit changes that the girls prefer. Check out this post to see more about this For The Guys high school senior all inclusive session.

For Greg’s session, we shot at his home in the Woodlands around the back yard, front pond and pool side. If you have a spacious and uncluttered yard, with great light, it’s a quick and easy spot for your senior photos so we don’t have to trek on location for your mini senior session. This is time saved for you, too! I love the white walls and columns, and the shots in the pool were really creative. Thanks to his mum for that fabulous idea!

Products for High School Seniors – The Woodlands Senior Photographer

Remember when people carried around small photo albums in their purse, so they could show off their family photos on the go? You don’t see that much anymore, since most people carry their photos in their pocket — that is, on their cell phone. It’s so easy to show your friends and family your phone snaps, and share them seamlessly on Facebook or Instagram.

When it comes to your professional photographs from your portrait photographer you want to be able to show them off to everyone without having to carry your prints around. You want them readily accessible, at the click of a button. Not your cell phone selfie snaps, but the gorgeous high quality images where you look like a rock star from your senior photoshoot.

The good news for my clients is that’s exactly what you get! Check out these customized senior portrait apps that you upload right to your phone or tablet, which brings all your favourite pictures from your senior portrait session to your fingertips. And the best thing is, you get to share the link to upload with all your friends and family, so they have them on their phones and tablets as well.

Ready for Part 2 of Celenia’s amazing senior pictures? I already featured Part 1 here, so check out the first half of her senior portraits where we went on location for some architectural elements to add interest and flair to her high school graduation photos. She has such an amazing sense of style, and when we headed out to the country for the second half of her senior session she brought along a few outfits that perfectly fit the earthy country chic look.

We had such gorgeous golden light!

One last outfit change as the sun is starting to set! Using a wide angle lens, you get a sense of drama you can’t get with standard portrait lenses. I’m all about variety, and using different angles and lenses to get the right look for each pose.  I love the sassy poses Celenia has here, a bit of a rockstar edge with the black shirt and trendy high waisted shorts. Girl has some style!

Street Style Senior Portraits – The Woodlands High School Senior Photographer

I got to do something a little different for this senior portrait session – a fun “urban” style shoot.  When seniors want “urban”  it’s a challenge since in the Woodlands we don’t have graffiti, broken down areas, dirty alleyways or junk yard type location. Our area is just too beautiful and well taken care of, which is a good thing!  So, for this senior shoot, we made use of  gorgeous parking garage light, colour pops, and window reflections to give a downtown air to her senior pictures. I’m always up for a good challenge!

Elena started with two beautiful summery dresses, the first in a bright colour to give a little flair to her senior pictures.  The electric blue looks amazing with her dark hair. She chose the Luxe Senior Session, which includes hair and make up styling by professional artist Monika Gellardo. I love the straightened hair bob, a perfect style for a fresh modern look for urban street photographs.

unique-senior-portraits-the-woodlands

the-woodlands-urban-senior

Time for an outfit change! Elena chose two locations for her senior pictures but wanted about 80% of her shoot to be done around town. This is what I love about offering personally tailored senior sessions for my clients — we meet before the session to go over which locations fit YOUR personality best and then choose outfits that will match the look and vibe of that location. She knew she already had a knock-em-out colourful dress, so for her next wardrobe change she opted for a sweet and feminine airy sundress, with  fresh spring flowers. This dress was a perfect match for the Mediterranean style (hey, I thought I was back in Greece or Italy for a minute there!) elements we found to shoot with, and columns.

senior-portraits-urban-market-street

senior-pictures-the-woodlands

Finally, we headed to the park for a little greenery. With this rustic style outfit, the plan was to find an earthy location to match the colours and feel of her favourite couture shirt and boots. I love how her gorgeous brown eyes just pop with the reds and greens. I had a lot of fun with Elena shooting her senior portraits and helping her put together the perfect Collection to show them off.

Boho Senior Style – The Woodlands Senior Photographer

I already blogged the first part of Alyssa’s senior session so click here to take a peek at the urban half of her senior portrait session.  For variety, I offer your choice of two locations so you can mix it up a little! At the Pre Consultation, we’ll go over styling and I’ll help you put together which outfits will work best at your chosen locations. With Alyssa’s first location, she chose to shoot at the canals for some architectural elements, framing and neutral backdrops so her colourful dresses popped and took center stage. You’ll get more variety in “looks” for your senior pictures if you choose locations that are different (urban, architectural, field, country, park, shopping district etc ) than you can get if you shoot in similar locations.

For the second half of her session, she changed her wardrobe and we switched from the fashionista to the sublime. She had a distinct vision for her senior photos, with a long flowing peach gown and floral crown so a field was the perfect location in Spring for that look.  For each look, I shoot differently, pose you in a different way and process to match the feel of the overall vision. For this boho look, it was all about soft beauty and serenity.

With two locations and multiple outfit changes, I simply have to split Celenia’s senior portrait session into two posts since we got so many amazing photos of her! This is Part 1 of her senior photoshoot shot in the Woodlands, with her first two wardrobe choices. We shot for unique perspectives using architectural framing and different angles, for some truly distinct senior pictures. No cookie cutter senior photos here that look like everyone else at your school.

When we met before her senior session for the Pre Consultation, we went over all her outfits and matched them with the types of locations she felt best suit her own personal style. With her beautiful dark hair and gorgeous skin, she opted for bright pops of colour, bold but still feminine with the twirly skirt and super high heels. Love her fashion sense!  Celenia booked the Senior Luxe session, which includes both hair and make up artist styling, and was perfectly glammed up for her pictures. I only work with the best make up artists, with professional grade products.

Senior Portraits in the Woodlands: Chic Urban

fashion-senior-pictures-the-woodlands

This senior portrait session was SO much fun and wow did she manage to fit a lot of different outfits into her photoshoot! My goal for senior pictures is for clients to showcase their style, all sides of themselves, so if you can fit half a dozen wardrobe changes in there, go for it! This is Part 1 of Alyssa’s senior picture session here in the Woodlands. She started out with some high fashion senior photos with urban styling and bright colours and tons of pretty accessories.

Top 10 Things to Bring to Your Senior Session

It’s Fashion Friday! If you’re planning your senior portrait session, here are the TOP TEN essentials you won’t want to forget for your photo shoot!

top ten things to bring to your senior session with fashion and make up tips

1) One casual outfit that reflects your own twist on the season’s hottest trends.
2) Extra hair clips to hold back strays.
3) A bag to stash your wallet, keys, cell phone and water while we walk around location.  Also works as a prop!
4) Something that helps tell the story of you. Are you a musician? A painter or writer?
5) A super glam outfit that shows your fierce and sassy side. Choose a vibrant colour.
6) High heels or wedges. These are very flattering for all body shapes and help straighten your posture when posing.
7) Flats for walking around location. You’ll be glad two hours into the shoot when we’re strolling through a field!
8) All your favourite accessories, whether girly and glittery, soft and boho, sporty or urban chic. The more you incorporate into your senior photo session, the better variety you’ll have in your final gallery!
9) Powder (with a compact mirror) and gloss for touch ups.
10) Your cheerleading or band uniform, sports jersey, letterman jacket or any other outfit that reflects your hobbies and activities.

There you are! The most important of the essentials you’ll need to rock your senior shoot!
