Rebrand Yourself – The Woodlands Headshot Photographer

Getting a new headshot taken is the perfect time to evaluate your personal brand and reconsider how you present yourself to potential clients and business partners. It might also be time to think about rebranding yourself, if you are considering making changes in your career. Is it time for you to rebrand? How do you know when it’s time?

YOU ARE MOVING INTO ANOTHER INDUSTRY
If you are thinking about a complete career change, have a new headshot taken that reflects the line of work into which you are moving. It might be that your previous job required a more or less formal look and tone.

YOU ARE RETURNING TO THE WORKFORCE
If you have been out of the workforce for a while, you’ll need a new headshot to replace the outdated one probably still lurking somewhere in your online profile.

YOU’RE ASPIRING TO HIGHER THINGS
The old adage tells  you to dress for the job you want. The same could be said for your online presence. Cultivate a high end, professional image and it won’t be hard for anyone to imagine seeing you in the CEO chair.

YOU’RE MOVING INTO RETIREMENT
Maybe the rebranding you are looking for is a signal that you are hanging up your power suits and are ready to take on a different role in the community. Your portrait should reflect your personality and your line of work, and influences how people perceive you.

YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE MESSAGE
Your headshot portrait tells a story about you – your work, your personality, your approach to your livelihood. If you don’t like what your current portrait says about you, it’s time to change that message. If it’s too stiff and formal, rebrand with a portrait that has more warmth and vibrancy. Or if your portrait was taken before you climbed a few rungs on the ladder, curate an image of power and importance with a new headshot in a power suit, in a cosmopolitan environment, such as the portrait of the gentleman above.

Busting the Top 5 Myths About Headshots – The Woodlands Headshot Photographer

I hear from a lot of clients who don’t want to have their headshots taken, but they know that having a professional portrait is essential in today’s world where employers are routinely scouting out applicants on various social media outlets. You absolutely want to make sure that you’re leaving a positive impression. There are some myths floating around about getting your photos taken, and the root of those worries are usually false if you hire  a professional.

MYTH ONE: My pictures will turn out awkward because I won’t know how to pose
One of the biggest reasons to select a professional photographer is the ability to pose you in a flattering way.  A good pro will put you at ease because of their expertise while posing you.  A professional will take charge of the shoot, leaving you confidant your photographer knows what they’re doing. It’s not on you, it’s on the photographer to get that great pose and angle.

Many people cite lack of confidence as their main reason for avoiding getting their headshots done.
Here is a truth: You do not have to be a natural model in front of the camera.
You do not have to worry you will look awkward

Hire a professional, and let them guide you.

MYTH TWO: The camera always makes me look bigger than I am/I need to lose weight before I have photos taken
This is a myth because you are most surely your own worst critic. However,  *wide angle lenses as found on most cheap cameras and cell phones* do add distortion. Without getting too technical, lenses range from fish eye  to telephoto, with a lot of millimetres in between. A professional will choose the right focal length lens and shooting angle to flatter your body type.  Trust that your photographer has the right equipment to make you look your best!

MYTH THREE: The photo doesn’t really matter, it’s my resume that counts
I’m sure you have an amazing resume, and the ability to connect with your clients and fellow professionals in person. However, your profile portrait is the first impression you are giving to the world. You are the face of your own brand. Brand professionally.

Put as much effort into your online persona as you do your personal presence.
Your headshot is your digital introduction to the world,
as much as your smile and handshake is in person.

MYTH FOUR: The photographer can just fix up anything in Photoshop
While editing programs are very powerful,  we’re really just moving pixels around and it can only do so much.  The technical aspects of the shoot are in the hands of your photographer, but you’re going to have to come prepared.  Your photographer can fix stray hairs, but cannot give you a whole new ‘do in Photoshop. We can remove blemishes, but we cannot completely redo your make up. A good photographer provides a natural looking headshot, without excess editing. And when necessary, make changes such as with the transition lenses below.

MYTH FIVE: I don’t have a nice suit, so I’ll have nothing to wear
If you work in a suit, you have a suit. If you don’t have a suit, and don’t work in a suit…why are you worried about having a suit for your portraits? Wear what defines you as a person, and as a business, and what reflects you and your style. Remember you are the ambassador for yourself and your work. Your headshot should tell that story about you and your work.

When To Have New Headshots Taken – The Woodlands Photographer

Have you been debating getting new headshots, but aren’t sure if it’s necessary? Or maybe you just really dread being in front of the camera, and are looking to put it off? We all know that headshots are essential for business people in all industries, but even if you aren’t in a corporate environment you might still need to get a great headshot of yourself. So how do you know when it’s time to update your headshots?

YOU HAVE CHANGED INDUSTRIES
Your headshot should represent you and your industry. If you have changed’ jobs, or are considering a career change, you might consider updating your headshots. Maybe you’ve moved from a casual working environment to one where suits and ties are not optional, or you’ve left your corporate job to open your own small business. Your headshot will say a lot about you and your work, so market yourself accordingly.

IT’S BEEN MORE THAN 5 YEARS
You should change your headshot as you age, to keep it current and accurately represent you. Every 2-3 years is a general timeframe for getting new shots done.

YOUR LOOKS HAVE CHANGED
This is especially true for women, who tend to change their looks often with their hairstyle and colour. If your headshot shows you as a redhead with short hair, but you’re now a long haired blonde, you’ll want to update to your current style. You want the people who meet you in person to recognize you from your portrait.

IT’S OUT OF STYLE
Clothes, hairstyles, make up and even headshot fashions go out of style. Think of those laser light school shots from the 80’s or 90’s Grease-style glamour shots. If your headshot has an outdated sense of fashion, modernize it. The current trend for headshots is away from the traditional studio  and outside for a cosmopolitan feel.

How to Achieve a Professional Online Portfolio – The Woodlands Headshot Photographer

We live in a fast changing world, and you need to have an online portfolio as a business professional to be seen and found by potential clients and employers. So you have a website, and join LinkedIn … but so does everyone else you’re competing with. How do you stand out and look professional online to get noticed? To build a professional online presence, consider the following when curating your website or online portfolio:

article and images about how to have a professional online portfolio

A PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOT
Start with a professional headshot. Trash that cell phone snap or blurry vacation photo. You want to look sharp and professional, and like you take yourself and your business seriously. Invest in yourself with a professional headshot.

UNCLUTTER FOR CLARITY
Keep your portfolio updated and succinct. Have clear headlines and bullet points with your most important achievements and projects, starting with your most recent projects. Keep the language clear and to the point, without run on sentences. Make it easy to read so your readers don’t have to search for relevant information about your and your work.

PROFESSIONAL CONTACT INFORMATION
Have a business email and telephone contact number. Your email should be your name or business, not your college nickname. Make sure those writing or calling you KNOW they have the right contact information, and recognize your name when they see your email in their inboxes.

A CLEAR TITLE IN YOUR HEADLINE
Have a professional title in your headline. A relevant title to your working career helps potential clients and employers know exactly what you do and what you know. On all your online portfolios, there is usually a space to add a title. Choose one that represents you honestly, in a professional manner, and that doesn’t seem contrived.

SHOWCASE YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE
Sprinkle your website with images. If you offer a product, show examples. If you have worked with partners in the past, or have attended conferences, have image samples from those experiences as an online footprint of your accomplishments. People react positively to an online portfolio full of glossy images and colour – just make sure those images are clear and professionally done.

Small Business Online Portfolio – The Woodlands Headshot Photographer

No matter what business you are in, you need a professional headshot to represent yourself to the world as a business leader. When curating an online portfolio, most companies will have a profile page for their employees on corporate directories and websites. As a small business owner, you have more freedom when creating your online presence and building a website that represents you and your own style. When designing your own business website, you will have options for page layouts and overall site design, and your portfolio page will play a vital role in representing yourself.

For example, image your About Me page with your image large to one side. While square looks natural on LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram, you have more options on your own website portfolio page. Having your headshot taken in portrait orientation is another way to stand out from the crowd, including more of your body language, to tell a story about yourself beyond what a simple headshot can convey.

Another layout could have your profile portrait in landscape orientation, across the width of the page. In this format, your headshot is larger and and text continues down the page under the portrait.

When shooting your headshots, we’ll discuss your options while considering how you will utilize your final images.

For optimal results, we’ll plan the best way to map out your online portfolio so your headshots fit perfectly into your overall vision for  your online portfolio.

Top 5 Tips on The Importance of a Professional Headshot – The Woodlands Photographer

When it comes to making an impression, you have just seconds to make a professional impact when your portfolio is being considered. When networking and establishing connections with potential clients and collaborators, it’s vital to appear professional and serious about your work and your business. Your business headshot is the first peek that others have into your work style.  Professional headshots are for everyone, and here is why YOU need one.

a business headshot taken around urban streets in the woodlands for business headshots

The Top 5 Reasons YOU need a professional headshot:

  1. To show you take your career as seriously as you want others to take your work. Look the part of a professional to be taken seriously by others.
  2. You invest in yourself. A great portrait is an investment in your business and your future. You have to show that you care about your business, and it’s growth, enough to make the best impression.
  3. To show you pay attention to detail. A careless photograph doesn’t show professionalism or attention to detail. Show prospective partners that you understand the importance of professionalism in all aspects of your work.
  4. To make a great first impression. Compared to other potential business experts, your professional headshot will stand out from the crowd. A clean, sharp shot will be more memorable than a poorly shot cell phone photo in an online portfolio.
  5. To show you would represent your work, and their work, well to the world. Someone who hires you wants to know that you will be a good ambassador as their client or employee. They want to hire people who will make THEM look good as well. A professional headshot shows that you are ready to be the face of their, and your own, work.

If you need a professional business headshot for your website, LinkedIn profile or business page and have the flexibility to go outdoors and use natural light, I provide on location portraits for your business in the Woodlands, Conroe and Spring area for  $150 + tx.  You receive your images as an immediate digital download, with commercial release.   I also offer indoor sessions if you prefer to have your headshots taken in your office, with studio lighting, or at a location of your choosing in the Woodlands, Spring or Conroe area.

Top 5 Tips For What To Wear for Urban Headshots – The Woodlands Headshot Photographer

Your professional headshot is a vital part of your business profile, and deciding what to wear for your portrait session is an important consideration. If you choose to have your business headshot taken outdoors in an urban area you’ll want to choose an outfit that matches the cosmopolitan location. Before I meet my clients for their business headshots, we discuss the overall vision for the final portrait, and how to optimize the results. Here are some style tips for your upcoming urban headshot portfolio photoshoot for an urban “city street” look that looks sharp and professional:

DRESS FOR YOUR BUSINESS
Always sharp and always in fashion, the classic black jacket never goes out of style for business workers. But if you don’t wear a suit or formal attire to work, don’t feel like you have to! Add colour if black doesn’t reflect your style. Or go business casual, if that’s what your personal and work style is. Wear what best defines you!

MODERN ACCESSORIES
Silver and gold long necklaces help modernize a suit jacket. You can also add a splash of colour, with enamel accents or gemstones. For gentlemen, a matching tie adds a touch of class.

HAIR AND MAKE UP STYLING
You want to look cosmopolitan and contemporary, with flawless make up and portrait ready hair.  Let a professional style you for an updated look.

THE RIGHT LOCATION
We want to have the bustle of the streets without the ugly distractions. This means choosing a spot without obvious signs, billboards, trademarked logos, street lamps, bicycle ramps or delivery trucks blocking the streets. A city sidewalk with buildings as a backdrop to block the light around us and make open shade is the ideal spot.

CONFIDENCE
You’re a busy professional, on the move, well connected in your area with a brilliant portfolio! Show that in your photos by bringing your belief in yourself, your accomplishments and your killer smile.

What Makes for a Great Headshot for Lawyers? – The Woodlands Photographer

I do a lot of headshots for professionals in many walks of business life, and the approach to each industry varies. For example, a social media blogger might want to look fun, cosmopolitan and trendy in her online portfolio. A yoga instructor will be looking for natural portraits accenting her abilities, utilizing the environment. And real estate agents want to look informed and well connected, with access to the most beautiful homes to serve their client’s needs.

I always ask my clients what business they are in, where their photos will be displayed and in what medium, and what their overall vision is for how they want to present themselves. Lawyers come to me for headshots, and often are unsure of how they want to portray themselves as a professional. Not too stern, but not a pushover. Tough, but trustworthy. Professional, but still likeable and easy to work with. I’ve been working with this lawfirm all year, updating headshots as they hire new employees, and we’ve taken this question seriously. So what makes for a great headshot for lawyers?

image of a lawyer for updated headshots for a lawfirm in the woodlands

A SHARP SUIT, WITH PROFESSIONAL STYLING
Come dressed to impress for your portraits with a power suit, as if you were already at work. Consider having your hair and make up professionally done by a stylist. It’s the foundation of a great headshot.

SIMPLICITY, WITHOUT DISTRACTIONS
Your overall style should be clean and simple, without distracting elements like oversized jewelry and hair pieces. The focus is on your and your professionalism. Compared with other industries, such as fashion bloggers or style experts, you’re not being hired for your personal style and fashion statements. Show potential clients that you are ready to focus on them.

A LOCATION THAT EMPHASIZES YOUR FIRM’S STYLE
Whether you work for yourself or a firm, you’ll want to showcase the overall atmosphere where you work. The location  you choose – whether urban cosmopolitan or earthy natural – says a lot about your law firm. A simple understated backdrop can be a powerful statement about you. A  neutral backdrop puts the focus on you.

SHOW YOUR SMILE
You want to come across as friendly, since lawyers can often be intimidating. With a genuine smile, you’ll come across as likeable and trustworthy to clients.

CLOSE UP AND PERSONAL
The eyes are the focal point of a photograph. Your headshot should be a close up shot of you looking into the camera – a pose that comes across to viewers as showing honesty. “Looking away” shots can be fun and work for certain industries, but a clear shot of the eyes can gain the trust of the viewer, which is important for a lawyer’s work.

Top 5 Tips For Incorporating Nature Into Your Headshots – The Woodlands

Your professional headshot says a lot about you, conveying a message to your potential clients and contacts before they even meet you.  The environment you choose for your headshots, as well as the light in which it’s taken, is a very important part of that message.  This use of outdoor light and colour, as well as the natural elements of a park or field, add an organic feel to your headshots, unlike the more studious impression that a studio shot with formal lighting projects.

Shooting your headshots outdoors in a natural park setting is a fresh and modern take on the traditional headshot, and looks just as professional and polished.  For the best results, here are a few things to consider before we shoot.

SET-F4

  1. WARDROBE. When shooting around flowers and greenery, choose an outfit that blends in well and compliments the backdrop. Since the portrait will be more airy than a formal studio shot and softer than an urban portrait, wearing colours that mimic the environment will blend better. Opt for shades of blue, yellow, cream, or pink for portraits taken around park greenery and florals.
  2. HAIR AND MAKE UP STYLING. Opt for less dramatic make up for natural portraits, using softer shades and more blending around the cheekbones. Dramatic eyes and darker shades will look more at home in an urban or studio shoot. Hair that is lightly styled rather than severely swept up, matches the softness of nature and feels more flowing.
  3. EXPRESSION. A natural portrait will be more lively and fresh than a formal or dramatically shot portrait. You’re looking for open smiles, honest expressions and “smiling eyes” instead of more serious expressions. I’ll guide you as we shoot, to bring out your true smile so it won’t look forced or strained!
  4. POSING. Many clients worry they won’t know how to pose, and they will look awkward. Don’t worry! It’s my job to guide you with posing so you look completely at ease and comfortable. I’ll show you how to stand, use your hands, and tilt your head in a way that compliments your body and facial shape, for optimal results.
  5. THE PERFECT LOCATION. Not all parks or green spaces are created equal. Trees are not ideal because we just see the bland tree bark at our eye level. We’re looking for flowering bushes and full greenery such as the azaleas in the portrait above, in a space with open shade (not direct sunlight).

The Woodlands Headshot Photographer LinkedIn Profile

These days, having a professional presence on LinkedIn is very important for business professionals and companies, to showcase your talent and make connections. Your Linkedin Portrait should be clear, cleanly edited and shot by a professional who understands the platform and how to shoot for optimal results.

Linkedin uses a square format for the profile image. For this reason, we’ll shoot your headshot portrait in landscape orientation so that it can be cleanly cropped on either side into a 1:1 ratio. For the best presentation, your headshot will be a close up shot, with a blurred background, so you stand out prominently in the image.

Take this example from a recent headshot session in the Woodlands. This client needed portraits that worked both for an online portfolio on a professional company website, as well as one that worked for LinkedIn. For this reason, I give my headshot clients several files.

We first shot in landscape orientation, so she could have a perfect headshot that would crop into a square format. It’s a clean and simple shot of just the head and shoulders, without distracting details in the background but still adding some colour to show it’s an urban style shot taken outdoors, with a more cosmopolitan vibe.

We also  shot in portrait orientation, so she could use this type of image in the “About Us” section of the company website, profiling it’s employees and team members. Having spoken to the company and employees before we shoot, I understood exactly what they needed. Had we not, this portrait would not be suitable for LinkedIn. In this pose, when you crop the image square you cut into the arms. It no longer looks like a professional pose. So luckily, we had already taken the above portrait – a perfect landscape shot that worked for the square format of Linkedin profiles!
