What Makes for a Great Headshot for Lawyers? – The Woodlands Photographer

I do a lot of headshots for professionals in many walks of business life, and the approach to each industry varies. For example, a social media blogger might want to look fun, cosmopolitan and trendy in her online portfolio. A yoga instructor will be looking for natural portraits accenting her abilities, utilizing the environment. And real estate agents want to look informed and well connected, with access to the most beautiful homes to serve their client’s needs.

I always ask my clients what business they are in, where their photos will be displayed and in what medium, and what their overall vision is for how they want to present themselves. Lawyers come to me for headshots, and often are unsure of how they want to portray themselves as a professional. Not too stern, but not a pushover. Tough, but trustworthy. Professional, but still likeable and easy to work with. I’ve been working with this lawfirm all year, updating headshots as they hire new employees, and we’ve taken this question seriously. So what makes for a great headshot for lawyers?

A SHARP SUIT, WITH PROFESSIONAL STYLING
Come dressed to impress for your portraits with a power suit, as if you were already at work. Consider having your hair and make up professionally done by a stylist. It’s the foundation of a great headshot.

SIMPLICITY, WITHOUT DISTRACTIONS
Your overall style should be clean and simple, without distracting elements like oversized jewelry and hair pieces. The focus is on your and your professionalism. Compared with other industries, such as fashion bloggers or style experts, you’re not being hired for your personal style and fashion statements. Show potential clients that you are ready to focus on them.

A LOCATION THAT EMPHASIZES YOUR FIRM’S STYLE
Whether you work for yourself or a firm, you’ll want to showcase the overall atmosphere where you work. The location  you choose – whether urban cosmopolitan or earthy natural – says a lot about your law firm. A simple understated backdrop can be a powerful statement about you. A  neutral backdrop puts the focus on you.

SHOW YOUR SMILE
You want to come across as friendly, since lawyers can often be intimidating. With a genuine smile, you’ll come across as likeable and trustworthy to clients.

CLOSE UP AND PERSONAL
The eyes are the focal point of a photograph. Your headshot should be a close up shot of you looking into the camera – a pose that comes across to viewers as showing honesty. “Looking away” shots can be fun and work for certain industries, but a clear shot of the eyes can gain the trust of the viewer, which is important for a lawyer’s work.

Top 5 Tips For Incorporating Nature Into Your Headshots – The Woodlands

Your professional headshot says a lot about you, conveying a message to your potential clients and contacts before they even meet you.  The environment you choose for your headshots, as well as the light in which it’s taken, is a very important part of that message.  This use of outdoor light and colour, as well as the natural elements of a park or field, add an organic feel to your headshots, unlike the more studious impression that a studio shot with formal lighting projects.

Shooting your headshots outdoors in a natural park setting is a fresh and modern take on the traditional headshot, and looks just as professional and polished.  For the best results, here are a few things to consider before we shoot.

SET-F4

  1. WARDROBE. When shooting around flowers and greenery, choose an outfit that blends in well and compliments the backdrop. Since the portrait will be more airy than a formal studio shot and softer than an urban portrait, wearing colours that mimic the environment will blend better. Opt for shades of blue, yellow, cream, or pink for portraits taken around park greenery and florals.
  2. HAIR AND MAKE UP STYLING. Opt for less dramatic make up for natural portraits, using softer shades and more blending around the cheekbones. Dramatic eyes and darker shades will look more at home in an urban or studio shoot. Hair that is lightly styled rather than severely swept up, matches the softness of nature and feels more flowing.
  3. EXPRESSION. A natural portrait will be more lively and fresh than a formal or dramatically shot portrait. You’re looking for open smiles, honest expressions and “smiling eyes” instead of more serious expressions. I’ll guide you as we shoot, to bring out your true smile so it won’t look forced or strained!
  4. POSING. Many clients worry they won’t know how to pose, and they will look awkward. Don’t worry! It’s my job to guide you with posing so you look completely at ease and comfortable. I’ll show you how to stand, use your hands, and tilt your head in a way that compliments your body and facial shape, for optimal results.
  5. THE PERFECT LOCATION. Not all parks or green spaces are created equal. Trees are not ideal because we just see the bland tree bark at our eye level. We’re looking for flowering bushes and full greenery such as the azaleas in the portrait above, in a space with open shade (not direct sunlight).

The Woodlands Headshot Photographer LinkedIn Profile

These days, having a professional presence on LinkedIn is very important for business professionals and companies, to showcase your talent and make connections. Your Linkedin Portrait should be clear, cleanly edited and shot by a professional who understands the platform and how to shoot for optimal results.

Linkedin uses a square format for the profile image. For this reason, we’ll shoot your headshot portrait in landscape orientation so that it can be cleanly cropped on either side into a 1:1 ratio. For the best presentation, your headshot will be a close up shot, with a blurred background, so you stand out prominently in the image.

Take this example from a recent headshot session in the Woodlands. This client needed portraits that worked both for an online portfolio on a professional company website, as well as one that worked for LinkedIn. For this reason, I give my headshot clients several files.

We first shot in landscape orientation, so she could have a perfect headshot that would crop into a square format. It’s a clean and simple shot of just the head and shoulders, without distracting details in the background but still adding some colour to show it’s an urban style shot taken outdoors, with a more cosmopolitan vibe.

We also  shot in portrait orientation, so she could use this type of image in the “About Us” section of the company website, profiling it’s employees and team members. Having spoken to the company and employees before we shoot, I understood exactly what they needed. Had we not, this portrait would not be suitable for LinkedIn. In this pose, when you crop the image square you cut into the arms. It no longer looks like a professional pose. So luckily, we had already taken the above portrait – a perfect landscape shot that worked for the square format of Linkedin profiles!
