Choosing Your Wall Portrait Size, Style and Format: The Woodlands Portrait Photographer

The family portrait is an important investment, so it’s essential to ensure you have carefully considered the overall look, style and proportion for the final piece. When your family, senior, engagement or maternity portrait session is completed, I invite clients for an in person Viewing Appointment so I can personally help you choose the perfect size, ratio and medium for your wall portrait. I’ll show you samples of the products I offer, so you can inspect and touch the products yourself.

For gallery wrapped canvases, these come ready to hang and you do not need to frame them. Metals are designed to be hung without a frame to show off the superior gloss, and the sturdy waterproof and UV resistant design means you don’t have to worry about sun or water damage. For photographic prints I offer complimentary styrene mounting so you can mount your portrait on the wall without a frame, and it’s thin enough to put in wall frames.  Here is a comparison of a senior portrait from a session in the Woodlands.

WITH FRAMES

OPTION 1:  By using a larger frame, you can highlight your wall portrait with accent matting around a smaller size print. The portrait keeps  it’s original ratio and composition intact with matching coloured mat before being inserted into a  frame. The matted frame means you don’t have to crop the original shot. There is a wide variety of colors and styles to choose from, for custom or traditional matted frames.

matting-8x12

OPTION 2: Without matting. This option zooms in larger on the image, but crops out some of the background and the subject.

framed-16x20

WITHOUT FRAMES

OPTION 1: A mounted print, metal or canvas without the frame. The traditional camera ratio for older cameras was 4:5, which created the infamous 8×10 desk print. As a wall portrait, your image could be anything from a 16×20 to a 32×40 or larger. Since the camera shoots at a 2:3 ratio, this crops your image.

crop-16x20

OPTION 2: A mounted print, metal or canvas without the frame, left in it’s original composition and ratio. This size works well for image of standing subjects, where you want to keep the surrounding environment. For this image, it’s the best choice for this particular image to keep the beautiful field around her.

Adorable Sisters – Professional Photographer The Woodlands

Another gorgeous day for a family portrait session for this family from Spring, TX. A clear blue sky, beautiful fall light, a field of wheat coloured grasses and these adorable sisters – such a fun session!

For family portraits with little ones, I make sure to leave enough shooting time to accommodate snacks and time outs, and some cuddles with their favourite blanket or teddy bear. We’ll start with the family together, since at the beginning of the session children are often the most coooperative and a little curious, which helps get those formal shots where we want eye contact. We will move on to  mother-daughter and daddy-daughter portraits, so every child gets a special moment alone with mom and dad. They love this part of the photoshoot!  I won’t let you get away with not having a shot of the two of you together either — children love to see portraits of their parents, and walking by a portrait of their parents happy and together has been proven to help boost their self esteem and happiness!

The kids are usually more at ease towards the end of the session, to get some individual and sibling shots. Families often worry about their little ones not cooperating, and sometimes all the naps and kisses in the world can’t make the portrait seem less scary for toddlers. With time and patience, we’ll get those family portraits you’re looking for! Some of my favourite child photographs are of the children just being themselves – and if teddy, a soother, or a comforting blanket is a part of your child’s life right now, making it a part of the portrait session (even if just to help soothe tears) may be something you’ll be thankful for years from now. I aim to capture your family, your children, as they are so you have those visual reminders in the years to come how they are NOW, while they’re little. Embrace this now, and document it forever.

Family Reunion The Woodlands Photographer

This family booked a family photography session for their get together around the holidays, on a beautiful crisp winter day full of sunlight and laughter. Since the family was getting together at the Woodlands Resort and Conference Center in the Woodlands, we arranged to have the family photo shoot on the resort grounds, outside by the docks and the gazebo. It was a great location for a family reunion photography session, and they knocked it out of the park with their classy outfits accented with blue.

For family event photography, where several families are getting together, I always make sure to shoot the entire family together and also to break off into small units so each family has a great photo of their own. With grandparents, it’s always great to have special shots of the grandparents with the children as well.

Family Portraits with a Lifestyle Twist – The Woodlands Photographer

When you’re shooting family portraits with the happiest little toddler, and you catch some of the best laughs,  you can’t help but smile when you see the final portraits! This little guy was so adorable, with the cutest smile and funniest expressions, it was easy to see how his parents were so laid back and relaxed for their family session. We were able to get some amazing shots of their family connection, for more of a lifestyle feel, which is harder to do with little ones who tend to shy away and take a while to come out of their shells. Not this little guy! He was grinning from ear to ear and ready to give kisses to mom and dad and pose for the camera.  This shoot really made my day!

Family Photographer in the Woodlands for Wall Canvases

The K family was definitely one of the most fun and laid back families I’ve had the pleasure to work with this year. What makes each family portrait session unique is the personalities of each family, and the energy they bring to their session, and how I use that to make personalized portraits for each client.

This family was all about having fun and laughter, and just being themselves for their portraits. After a few posed photos, we slowed things down and just let the family laugh and interact, to let their personalities shine through. I was also really happy that they brought the grandparents along for the shoot, and of course the adorable puppy!

Engagement Photographer in the Woodlands – Fall Portraits

Fall is my absolute favourite time of year, and engagement portraits are one of my favourite types of sessions to shoot! So I’m totally in love with this fall engagement session here in Spring with this soon-to-be-wed couple from the Woodlands, right at peak fall season. Her dress is the most beautiful shade of magenta, a perfect match for the amazing fall foliage we found around the Spring area. Against an almost painterly looking backdrop, this engagement couple look radiant and so happy in love.

When I shoot engagement portraits, I always try to get a variety of poses and expressions so your pictures show all the different sides of you and your relationship. It’s always wonderful to have posed portraits, especially for Save the Date cards, but for wedding slideshows and  storybooks it’s even better to have a set of engagement portraits that show you in more candid moments of laughter and togetherness. Best wishes to this gorgeous couple, may they have a long and happy life together!

Family Photographer in the Woodlands – Classic Portraits

This wonderful family from the Woodlands was such a breeze to photograph for their holiday portraits. Just about everything was perfect for their family session – the weather was gorgeous, the light was right, the fall colours were in full splendor, and this family styled their portraits beautifully. The navy blue is a great hue for shooting family portraits outdoors, and the accents of neutral cream and brown are the perfect match.

For family pictures, we shoot some formals with the entire family together, happy and having fun, for a great canvas or mounted print for the wall portrait. This will be the centre-piece of your home gallery set, on the wall or above the fireplace. Add in some complementary shots of the parents together, and the kids, and you have a fantastic wall cluster of canvases or framed prints.

photographers the woodlands

We’ll also take some fun portraits of the entire family, where they’re a little more lifestyle oriented, or candid. Formal portraits are fantastic for showcasing in the home, but these fun family pictures make great cards,  gifts, or collages and family albums. Kids love to see photos of their family having fun together, and laughing, and you’ll remember years from now how your family laughed together and enjoyed just being together.

Christmas and New Years Sessions in The Woodlands

This family had two series done for their holiday portraits this year! First, the super fun family photos for personal use, and just to have fabulous images from 2104, as they are now. Check out their family portrait series by CLICKING HERE.

Then, for the special images to put on their Christmas cards to send out to family and friends, we shot this series in their holiday outfits (love the red!) for special holiday themed family portraits. With my super quick turn around time, families have more than enough time to put their cards together and mail them out, or to create digital cards for emailing and posting online.

Love this family! Thank you for choosing me for your Christmas card session this holiday season!

It’s not too late! Personally, with my busy fall season, I rarely get the chance to send out cards in December. So, I send out Happy New Years cards instead, after the busy season is behind me and I have more time. I know you’re busy too! If you didn’t have time in your schedule this season for Christmas or holiday cards, you can still get some great shots to send out cards to friends and family to wish them a Happy New Year!

Child Photographer in The Woodlands – Birthday Session

This is sweet little Noah, and his mama contacted me to do a very special shoot to celebrate his third birthday. I offer short one hour “mini shoots” in Spring and the Woodlands for exactly these kind of sessions — to celebrate a milestone or just get a handful of beautiful portraits to remember this moment, this now, and how someone special in your life is at this point in time. Our children change so fast, and keeping an album of yearly pictures or a wall of portraits as they grow up is a great way to capture forever every stage of their life.

This little sweetie and his big blue eyes was full of wonder and giggles. And his blue shirt was the perfect outfit to show off those gorgeous eyes!

Mini Collages for Home and Office Desks – The Woodlands Photography

When it comes to how you’ll display the images from your senior, family, maternity or engagement portrait session, there are a lot of choices out there. I will guide you at your viewing and ordering session, showing you all the fantastic products I offer in person so you can see them close up and feel the superior quality.  From large groupings of wall canvases, to mini albums for portability, you’ll get the products that are right for you.

While large mounted prints and wall art are wonderful for home displays,  you also have some smaller product options so you can take your favourite photos into more personal spaces, like your office desk or bedroom dresser. One of the most perfect ways to size down is to put a few images together in a mini collage. I offer these 5×10 desk collages, mounted on artboard for durability, which can be fit into a frame or beautifully displayed in an easel. I offer several designs to choose from, depending on how many images you want to show off.

Put one in your bedroom, to keep photos of your kids by your bedside.

Relaxed and Fun Family Portraits in the Woodlands

I get all kinds of families who come to me for their family portraits, and no two families are alike. Some want classic and traditional portraits for the mantle, formal poses and elegant styling. Some want documentary style lifestyle photos of their families at home, to personalize their family sessions and to remember where they were at this time in their lives, as moments are so fleeting. And some, like this family, want to have fun and relaxed candid portraits of their family, mixed with the traditional, to celebrate the relationships we share and the fun we have as a family when we are together.

We will include some traditional family portraits, for sharing with family members (remember — Grandma always really loves that one posed photo of her beloved family together, happy and smiling at the camera, and she’ll be expecting her print!) but then we can skip around, laugh and run, and really get down to the serious business of enjoying this day together making beautiful family portraits that really capture YOU as you truly are. For this family, that was bright, happy and lots of smiles!

top-photographer-the-woodlands

These types of family sessions make great collages and albums, since we shoot for family combinations having fun, dancing, snuggling, playing games and just enjoying being together.

fun-family-portraits-the-woodlands

We’ll take each child separately, and capture some beautiful portraits that match each child’s personality.  I love to include photos that tell the entire story of each child, from the fun and perky shots to the serene and lovely – the girl with her eyes closed, dreaming. The sweet boy who offers me a flower. The little one with her bright eyes and big smile.

The Heart of the Family – The Woodlands Photographer

When you’re preparing to have your family portraits done this year, there’s a lot of questions that may be running through your mind and a lot of details you have to consider. Pulling the wardrobe together. Checking your schedule to make sure the kids don’t have soccer practice the day of the session.  Do you want to have a fun lifestyle session to make into an album, or posed formal family portraits for the wall? You can rest assured I’ll help you through it. We’ll go over all these details in our consultation, so you can be sure that on the day of the family portrait session you’ll be fully confidant that you are prepared and ready for some fun.

You already know you want some special family portraits, of everyone together. You definitely have thought about all the great shots we’ll get of the kids, both individually and together. Now it’s time to think about you! One thing you may not have really considered is getting some great portraits of you and your spouse together.

The heart of the family is you. The parents. You are who your children look up to with love every day for guidance and support. And kids love to see their parents together! This is why I take the time to get some beautiful couple portraits of the two of you together, just like you did for your engagement portraits and your wedding photos. You’ll be glad to have those portraits through the years, as you grow old together. As we celebrate the family, celebrate your love too.

photographer-the-woodlands

Take a look at just a few of the amazing parents I’ve had the opportunity to photograph this year! You can feel the love between the them. And every time they look at these photos, they’ll be reminded of how it all began – with the love of two people, who came together and built a beautiful family.

The Woodlands Photographer – Family Portraits

A fun and happy family to share today! I shot these family portraits for Dallas wedding photographer Asapphire Photography, an early  morning shoot since she had a long drive back home ahead of her from the Woodlands!

Such a fabulous family and a great day for family photos since it was a little cooler at sunrise. As a photographer, she understood exactly the need to get great flattering light and she chose the perfect outfits to express their fun but sophisticated style – beautiful pops of colour that look amazing on them. We shot in two locations close together, with an outfit change to go from formal in front of the deep wood and stone, to casual in the more natural woodsy setting. I laughed so much at this session, and had a lot of silly moments with five year old Miss M who rocked the poses!

As always, I’m so grateful when families choose me as a their family photographer and let me spend a few hours making beautiful photos of them. I had a great time with this family!

Outdoor Family Photos in the Woodlands

This family came to me with their brothers and sisters for a combined family session that included individual portraits of each family.  I have special rates for extended family sessions that let you book a two hour time slot and include all family units so everyone gets their own family portrait at a discounted rate than booking separate family sessions. These are especially popular in the fall, to get family portraits of everyone gathered together before and during the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, those wonderful times of year when the whole family is celebrating together. And what better way to remember these special times than with family portraits!

This family was gathered together at the family home in the Woodlands, a gorgeous home that featured this amazing front step where they chose to have their family photos taken. I had a lot of fun with this family, and everyone came so beautifully styled! Notice how they chose accents of blue in their wardrobe, to achieve a nice colour harmony. And I adore the boots on mom!

How to Display Your Portraits: Wall Prints

There is nothing that makes a home feel more complete than hanging the family portraits of the people you love on the wall. When you book your family, senior, maternity or engagement session, we’ll set a time to go over the most important aspects of your upcoming photo shoot so your pictures not only exceed your expectations but also are a perfect match for your home.

MATCHING DECOR

At your consultation, we’ll discuss your home decor so that the entire look of the final portrait that will be framed for the wall is a match. From the colour of your wardrobe to the style you choose – casual, formal or whimsical – we’ll talk details and find the best location in the Woodlands or Spring area to fit your vision, whether it’s earthy with natural colours or bright and colourful with a modern twist.

large-wall-art-the-woodlands

MEASUREMENTS

Before your in person viewing session, it’s a good idea to take measurements of the space where the portraits will go. In the home entrance, above the mantle in the living room, or in the master bedroom are popular places to hang the large family photo. After you’ve chosen your favourite image for display, I’ll show you how it will look in your chosen size. Different sizes can also change the shape, so an 16×24 will be a different shape (ie. longer or skinnier) than the more square shaped 30×40 because of the change in ratio. Remember – 8×10 prints are gift prints! That is not the size you want on your walls, that is the size of the photo you give to Grandma to frame for her mantle. Go big! Here is a little article I wrote on the difference between gift prints and wall art.

white sofa in a orange living-room

COLOUR OR BLACK AND WHITE

Along with your home decor, your personal preference for colour or black and white photos is also something to consider. I convert some of the pictures in your gallery to monochrome, when the light is right and the background isn’t too busy to  be a distraction. I personally love black and white photography, and most of the large prints I have of my own children and for my family album have been converted. When you purchase a digital file, if there is a black and white copy, you keep them both! So it you are printing, we’ll go over the two options to decide which version is right for you.

I look forward to helping you get the perfect piece of wall art for your home!

Celebrating Milestones – The Woodlands Photographer

For this wonderful lady’s very special birthday, the entire family flew in for a family photo shoot as a gift to her.  For special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries, the gift of beautiful photographs of everyone together is something the entire family will enjoy and have as keepsakes forever, photographs that are passed down to children and grandchildren.

They chose to have their family reunion photographed at their very own property in the Woodlands. I think it’s a wonderful idea if you have the space and light on your own land to have your family portrait session.  So how is it different when shooting at your home, instead of on location?

anniversary-portraits-the-woodlands

CAREFUL PLANNING:

Before your session, I’ll visit your home and property to scout it out for the best light and backdrop, so we are prepared before the day of the shoot. I look for natural framing, and corners with filtered light to infuse your family portraits with a sunny glow without the harshness of direct sunlight, irregular patterns of dappled lighting,  or the dull colours and flat light of heavy shade. We’ll have the opportunity to talk about wardrobe choices, and match your perfect outfit with your location and home so your family pictures reflect your style.

HOME AND HARMONY:

This also gives us a chance to evaluate the space where you will hang your family portrait, so when it comes time to order we’ll know exactly which size and ratio will look best, and if a canvas, mounted print or metallic is right for your personal decor.  It also helps to bring together the total colour harmony when choosing your outfits. If your living room is blue and white, we can choose outfits that will complement your space so it doesn’t look out of place.

Being prepared before we shoot ensures all the details are accounted for – the location, the styling and the colours of the room.  You can be confidant that when you finally hang that print on the wall, it will be the perfect fit.

At Home Family Portraits in the Woodlands

I had the pleasure to photograph this family at their home in the Woodlands for some updated family portraits.  They had such a great sense of style, and I love the pop of red with the black they are wearing!   I love to shoot on location, and have several excellent spots around the Spring and Woodlands area for more environmental portraiture, but shooting at a client’s home really personalizes the portraits.

Lifestyle and Portraits The Woodlands Family Photographer

One thing I love to encourage my families to do, after any posed portraits they want for gifts and display, is to have some fun with the session and shoot some frames of everyone just being together, laughing and playing.  A portrait session with me is more than just getting the gorgeous pictures that you’ll love forever.  It’s two hours of being together, doing something special, and making memories. Far from being stressful, your portrait session will be fun, relaxing and full of laughter.
